The Drifters in concert at the historic Turnage Theatre

October 1, 2024

The Drifters are coming to town this weekend! Two performances will
be presented at the historic Turnage Theatre: a 5pm show as well as an
8pm show.

This legendary band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988
and are known for such classic hits as ‘Under the Boardwalk,’ ‘This Magic
Moment,’ and ‘There Goes my Baby.’

The shows are being presented by the Inner Banks STEM Center and the Beaufort
County Arts Council. IBX STEM President and event organizer, Al Powell,
says that the two organizations represent two different platforms. "IBX
STEM comes from the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
The Turnage Theatre has been instrumental in bringing the arts- plays,
musicals, concerts, to the area. So we decided to combine our resources
and do what we call a STEAM presentation where we combine the STEM disciplines
with the arts and showcase both our exhibits. This is showing our
community how everyday things they take for granted are using STEAM to
illustrate some of the things they do. Like architecture, design of a car, the
way rooms are painted, designed; all that is STEAM."

Powell says the Turnage has a capacity of about 420 seats, so they wanted to
give as many people as possible a chance to see this historic show. So
they are having two performances. He says that the tickets are very
reasonably priced. "They range from $35 to $55, which is a great deal to
see such a celebrated band that’s a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

The IBX STEM organization has been around since 2012. The center has
programs for youth that are interested in these programs. "We focus on
three primary areas to get kids interested in the programs: aviation, (which
includes drones), boating, and renewable energy. We have summer camps and
after school programs. We have also just started a new aviation academy
at Beaufort County Community College. We are really excited about this program."

The concerts will feature a special technology and arts exhibit.
Powell says it’s the perfect blend of innovation and classic
entertainment. "The concert is actually a fundraiser for the Turnage and
the STEM Center. These fundraisers help with scholarships for the youth
in our programs." In conjunction with the concert, there will also be
exhibits at the Harbor District Market.

Powell says this is a very unique opportunity with The Drifters coming
here. "They are coming from Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and New York to
perform in Washington. They are excited about performing here. I
hope we have good representation. People can go on the Turnage Theatre
website to get tickets. It’s going to be a great family event."
